8 dead after wall collapses in Senegal's football stadium
At least 8 people have been killed and 49 others injured after a wall collapsed at the Demba Diop stadium in Senegal. The incident took place at the end of the League Cup final between Stade de Mbour and Union Sportive Ouakam. The wall collapsed after police used tear gas to control the fighting which started between rival fans.
What happened inside the stadium?
Fans of both the football teams went berserk after Mbour team scored in the first period of extra time to win 2-1, and hence violence broke out at the final whistle. Some fans were seen throwing stones at others. Meanwhile, police used tear gas to control the scuffle and suddenly the wall collapsed. People were then seen scrambling over a low wall.
Punishments should be given to prevent such incidents: Govt. Spokesman
After the violence broke out and the wall collapsed, ambulances and firefighters were rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, reported a local news agency. Spokesman for Senegal's President Macky Sall said that campaigning for the upcoming elections would be suspended on Sunday as a mark of respect and that there must be "punishments served as a warning" for future.
