FIFA 2018: Russian women advised against sleeping with guests
Lawmaker Tamara Pletneva has advised Russian women to not sleep with footballers during the FIFA World Cup 2018, to avoid giving birth to mixed race children. 70-year-old Pletneva, who is the leader of women and children body in Russia's Lower House, made these remarks on a radio show. A Communist, Pletneva said women should give birth to Russian kids only.
According to Pletneva, women should 'give birth to our children'
When asked about President Vladimir Putin's plan to boost Russia's birth rate, Pletneva said, "We should be giving birth to our own children." She said children, born out of relationships with foreigners, suffer as they are raised by single mothers. "It's lucky if they're the same race (as the mother) but if they're of another race, it's worse," she added.
Interestingly, Pletneva also ridiculed the #MeToo movement previously
Pletneva's controversial statement put her at the receiving end of flak with radio journalist Tatyana Felgenhauer writing on Twitter, "I wonder what Pletneva will say when she's reminded of Say No to Racism". Notably, Pletneva is not new to controversy. Earlier, she ridiculed the #MeToo campaign and had said, "We're not in America or Europe. Why should we copy everything?"
Meanwhile, the mood in Russia is ecstatic
Fans of different countries have flooded Russia for the FIFA World Cup and the mood on streets is celebratory. This is the first time Russia is hosting the big event. Reportedly, bars are working overtime to accommodate the surge in customers. This year all eyes will be set on Mohammad Salah, Egypt's latest superstar, more than Ronaldo or Messi.
