Why US has advised its citizens against traveling to Pakistan
The United States has issued a travel advisory for its citizens, urging them to reconsider plans to visit Pakistan due to the heightened risk of terrorism. The advisory specifically warns against traveling to Balochistan province and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, including the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It also advises against venturing near the immediate vicinity of the India-Pakistan border and Line of Control (LoC) due to potential armed conflict.
US advisory highlights frequent terrorist attacks in Pakistan
The advisory states that violent extremist groups continue to plot attacks in Pakistan, with Balochistan and KP provinces being frequent targets. It mentions that "large-scale terrorist attacks have resulted in numerous casualties, and small-scale attacks are frequent." The advisory also warns that terrorists may strike without warning at transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, universities, tourist attractions, schools, hospitals places of worship and government facilities.
US citizens warned about participation in protests
The advisory further cautions that proximity to a protest can draw attention from Pakistani security forces. It notes instances where US citizens have been detained for participating in protests or posting content on social media perceived as critical of the Pakistani government, military, or officials. The advisory also mentions frequent internet and mobile phone service outages, especially during protests.
US classifies Pakistan under Level 3 travel advisory
Following a periodic review, the US has classified Pakistan under Level 3 in its updated travel advisory, which means "reconsider travel." This is just one step below the final Level 4 category, "do not travel," which has been applied to Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA areas as well as the vicinity of the LoC. The advisory describes Pakistan's security environment as fluid and subject to change without notice.
