US: Book signed by Rabindranath Tagore up for auction
The English translation of Rabindranath Tagore's famous Bengali play "Raja" is up for auction in the US. Titled as "The King of the Dark Chamber", the book contained sign of Nobel laureate on the introductory page using a fountain pen. The bidding for the book ends on 7 March. What's the plot of the book?
The play revolves around a mysterious, unseen, omniscient king, who is both benevolent and efficient. He is alienated by the royal persons but a strong and an immense source of power. His unwillingness towards things causes most of the drama in the story, rattling his beautiful wife and the kings of nearby kingdoms. The book was consigned by an American book dealer.
Brief background about Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize (Literature) in 1913. Though he wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first and foremost a poet, publishing more than 50 volumes of poetry. He was also knighted by the British in 1915. However, he gave up his knighthood after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.
