'Quad group of like-minded countries...': Modi ahead of US visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday embarked on a three-day visit to the United States, where he will participate in the 6th Quad Leaders's Summit and address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Ahead of his departure, PM Modi said that the Quad has emerged as a key group of like-minded countries working for peace, progress, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
PM Modi to hold bilateral meetings with Quad leaders
During his visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of Quad—Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and US President Joe Biden. "My meeting with President Biden will allow us to review and identify new pathways to further deepen India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership for the benefit of our people and the global good," he said in a statement.
Quad leaders to launch Cancer Moonshot initiative
The Quad leaders are set to launch a special drive called the Cancer Moonshot, aimed at preventing, detecting, and treating cancer. They will also discuss steps to enhance the grouping's work in key areas such as maritime security, health security, connectivity infrastructure, disaster relief and counter-terrorism. The summit will be hosted by Biden in his hometown of Wilmington on Saturday.
PM Modi to address Summit of the Future at UNGA
In addition to the Quad Summit, PM Modi will also address the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23. "The Summit of the Future is an opportunity for the global community to chart the road ahead for betterment of humanity," he said. He will also hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on sidelines of UNGA.
PM Modi to interact with Indian diaspora, US business leaders
PM Modi is also scheduled to interact with the Indian diaspora at a community event in Long Island, New York on September 22. The theme of this event is "Modi & US: Progress Together," celebrating India and the US's shared cultural ethos. On the same day, he will attend a Business Roundtable with CEOs of leading US companies in cutting-edge areas like Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing and biotechnology.
PM Modi expected to sign agreements with US
During his visit, PM Modi is expected to sign two agreements with the US - the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the India-US drug framework. The Quad Leaders's Summit will also address pressing global challenges such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, escalating tensions in West Asia, and the situation in Indo-Pacific. At UNGA's Summit of Future, he will outline India's priorities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development.
