Putin demands suspension of all Ukraine arms supplies for ceasefire
What's the story
Russian President Vladimir Putin is demanding a halt to all arms deliveries to Ukraine as a condition for supporting a 30-day ceasefire suggested by former US President Donald Trump.
The demand was made ahead of a phone call between the two leaders on possible steps toward ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"The call is going well, and still in progress," said the White House.
European response
Europe hesitant to comply with Russia's demand
Putin has insisted that both the US and European nations stop military aid to Ukraine during the proposed ceasefire.
According to a senior European official and three sources familiar with Russia's position, Moscow views this as a precondition for agreeing to the truce.
However, Europe is still hesitant to give in to the demand, fearing it would leave Ukraine exposed while letting Russia rearm.
Ukrainian stance
Ukraine expresses concern over Russia's conditions
While Kyiv has accepted a 30-day ceasefire, Ukrainian officials are concerned that Russia would try to attach conditions, including suspending military aid.
A Kyiv official said a truce would be reached in a week if Moscow truly agreed to halt its military operations.
The UK and European Union are working on fresh military aid packages for Ukraine.
UK PM Keir Starmer reiterated Ukraine must be placed in the "strongest possible position" for lasting peace.
Diplomatic efforts
Trump lifts halt on arms supplies
The US and Ukraine announced the ceasefire plan last week after a day of talks in Saudi Arabia.
The Trump administration also announced it was lifting a roughly week-long halt to arms supplies and intelligence sharing that it had imposed to pressure Ukraine into agreeing to diplomatic efforts.
Following the meeting, Trump said he was willing to meet Putin as part of his efforts to broker an end to Russia's three-year-long invasion of Ukraine.
