Pope Francis discharged from hospital after 5 weeks of treatment
What's the story
Pope Francis has been released from Rome's Gemelli University Hospital, following a five-week stay for a severe bout of pneumonia.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been using a wheelchair for years, was smiling and waving at supporters as he was driven out.
His face looked swollen as he made his first public appearance since being admitted on February 14.
Hospital stay
Pope's public appearance before discharge
Before being discharged, Pope Francis briefly appeared on the balcony of the hospital. He thanked an elderly woman who had brought him yellow flowers and greeted the crowd with a thumbs-up.
His 38-day stay at the Gemelli University Hospital was the longest of his 12-year papacy, and the second longest in recent papal history, and had sparked concerns of possible resignation or funeral due to the severity of his health condition.
Vatican's statement
Pope's call for peace in Gaza
After his release, the Vatican published Pope Francis's Angelus prayer calling for an "immediate" halt to Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.
He said he was saddened by the renewal of heavy bombardment and urged the immediate cessation of weapons and dialogue to liberate hostages and secure a definitive ceasefire.
The pontiff stressed that "the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is once again very serious."
Recovery process
Pope's health updates and future plans
Pope Francis's recovery will now take place at the Vatican, where he is expected to rest for two months.
Doctors have advised him against large gatherings and strenuous activities, but think he will eventually resume all normal activities.
The pontiff had been hospitalized on February 14 with bronchitis that worsened into a complex bacterial, viral, and fungal respiratory tract infection followed by pneumonia in both lungs.
