What to expect from PM Modi's historic visit to Ukraine
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a historic visit to Ukraine on Friday, marking the first such trip by an Indian prime minister since Ukraine's independence in 1991. The visit comes at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and follows PM Modi's two-day "productive" trip to Poland. Notably, this diplomatic engagement is taking place nearly six weeks after his high-profile trip to Moscow, which drew criticism from the US and some Western allies.
PM Modi's agenda in Ukraine
During his stay in Ukraine, PM Modi is expected to discuss with President Zelenskyy the initiatives taken toward a peaceful resolution of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Prior to his departure for Ukraine, the PM had expressed his desire for an early return of peace and stability in the region. "I look forward to the opportunity to build upon earlier conversations with President Zelenskyy on strengthening bilateral cooperation," PM Modi said.
What's India's stance on the conflict
PM Modi will travel from Poland to Kyiv on a "Rail Force One" train, a journey that will take approximately 10 hours. The return trip is also expected to be of the same duration. Despite not condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, India has consistently advocated for resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
PM Modi's engagements in Kyiv
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi's engagements in Kyiv will cover various aspects of bilateral ties including political, trade, economic, investments, education, cultural exchanges and humanitarian assistance. To recall, in June this year, he met with President Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy. During this meeting, he emphasized India's commitment to supporting a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict through "dialogue and diplomacy."
PM's visit to Poland
PM Modi arrived in Poland on Wednesday, the first leg of his two-nation trip and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 45 years. "The visit gave an opportunity to deepen cooperation with a valued friend. We look forward to closer business and cultural connect with Poland. Our friendship can certainly contribute to a better planet. I thank the Polish people and the government for their warmth," the PM added.
