'Free, open Indo-Pacific our shared priority': Modi at Quad Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to the United States, addressed the sixth Quad Leaders's Summit in Wilmington on Saturday. In his opening remarks at the summit, PM Modi emphasized that a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific region is a shared priority for all Quad countries. The meeting was attended by US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
PM Modi highlights Quad's commitment amid global tensions
PM Modi acknowledged that the summit is taking place during a period of global tension and conflict. "At such a time, it is important for all of humanity that the members of the Quad move forward based on shared democratic values," he said. He further clarified, "We are not against anybody. All of us support rules-based international order, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and peaceful resolution of all disputes."
Quad's initiatives and future prospects discussed
The Indian prime minister further highlighted the Quad's positive initiatives in areas such as health security, critical and emerging technologies, climate change, and capacity building. "Our message is clear - the Quad is here to stay, to assist, to partner, and to complement," he stated. PM Modi also proposed hosting the next Quad Leaders's Summit in India in 2025.
PM Modi praises President Biden's leadership
At the summit, PM Modi also praised Biden's leadership, noting that the first Quad summit was held under his guidance. "I express my heartfelt gratitude to you (Biden) for your firm commitment, leadership, and contribution toward the Quad," said PM Modi. Prior to the summit, he held bilateral talks with President Biden at his Delaware home, describing them as "extremely fruitful" in an online post.
PM Modi's upcoming engagements in the US
On Sunday, PM Modi will address the Summit of the Future at the UN General Assembly in New York and interact with Indian expatriates. He is also expected to meet with CEOs of leading US-based companies to foster collaborations in areas such as AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, and biotechnology. The Quad is a diplomatic partnership between four countries: Australia, India, Japan, and the US. This weekend's summit marks the fourth in-person and sixth total gathering of the leaders since 2021.
