Musk nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by European Parliament member
What's the story
SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize by Branko Grims, a member of the European Parliament from Slovenia.
The nomination was announced on X (formerly Twitter), which Musk now owns.
Grims mentioned Musk's unwavering support for the "fundamental human right of freedom of speech and thus for peace" as the main reason behind his nomination.
Advocacy recognition
Grims praises Musk's contribution to free speech
Grims, a leading Slovenian politician, posted an email from the Norwegian Nobel Institute, confirming Musk's nomination had been successfully submitted.
In a statement to Brussels Signal News in December, Grims had argued Musk deserved recognition for advancing free speech.
He had said Musk had done more for freedom of speech than anyone else in recent times.
Grims is a prominent figure in Slovenian politics who advocated for "remigration" as a means of removing immigrants from Europe.
Platform rebranding
Musk's Twitter takeover hailed as significant for Western civilization
Grims also praised Musk's acquisition and rebranding of Twitter as X, calling it a watershed moment for Western civilization.
This isn't the first time Musk has been nominated for the coveted award.
In 2024, Norwegian libertarian member of Parliament Marius Nilsen had also suggested Musk's name for the prize, noting his defense of dialogue and free speech in a polarized world.
Nomination disclosure
Nobel Peace Prize nomination process and past nominees
Notably, the Nobel Peace Prize does not officially announce nominees until 50 years after submission.
However, eligible nominators can disclose their submissions publicly.
Apart from Musk, former President Donald Trump was also nominated for the prize by Republican Representative Claudia Tenney last year, citing his role in brokering the Abraham Accords.
