Modi arrives in US, to hold high-stake talks with Trump
What's the story
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Washington DC on Thursday on a two-day visit to hold high-stakes talks with President Donald Trump.
This is their first bilateral meeting since Trump assumed his second term last month.
Modi is staying at the Blair House, the US presidential guest house, where he was given a warm welcome by the Indian-American community.
Ahead of the bilateral talks, Trump met newly confirmed Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and discussed various aspects of India-US friendship.
Trade talks
Modi's visit focuses on trade and immigration issues
The visit comes amid concerns over Trump's "America First" trade agenda and immigration policies.
Modi's primary focus is likely to prevent any punitive trade actions by the US against India, especially after Trump recently announced a 25% tariff on global steel and aluminum imports, which could affect Indian exporters.
The leaders are expected to discuss expanding trade, investment, energy, defense technology and immigration.

Deportation dispute
Deportation of Indians, trade pact on agenda
Just last week, the US deported 104 Indians in handcuffs and shackles on a military aircraft, an issue that has caused outrage in India.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had stated in Parliament that New Delhi is in communication with the US to ensure that returning Indian deportees are not mistreated in any way.
Modi and Trump are also likely to discuss larger geopolitical issues, including the Indo-Pacific region, Ukraine and developments in West Asia.
Strategic meetings
Modi to meet US intelligence director, business leaders
According to PTI, New Delhi may also propose slashing tariffs in at least a dozen sectors for some reciprocity from the White House.
During his stay, Modi will meet billionaire Elon Musk and other business leaders.
This trip will be Modi's 10th visit to the United States as prime minister and his fourth meeting with Trump as president.
