In memoir, Michelle Obama speaks about IVF, pregnancy and marriage
Former First Lady Michelle Obama's memoir 'Becoming' delves deep into her years in the White House, her marriage with Barack, her disdain for President Donald Trump, miscarriage and giving birth to daughters Sasha and Malia through IVF. The memoir is divided into three parts: Becoming Me, Becoming Us, Becoming More, which touches on various ups and downs of Michelle, the celebrated personality.
Michelle didn't know how common miscarriages were
Michelle detailed her struggle with pregnancy, a topic that is usually relegated to the shadows. She revealed she gave herself necessary shots as her husband was busy with his duties as a legislator. In an interview, she confessed she didn't know how common miscarriages were "because we don't talk about them. We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we're broken."
A positive pregnancy-test made Obamas happy, but didn't last long
"We had one pregnancy test come back positive, which caused us both to forget every worry and swoon with joy, but a couple of weeks later I had a miscarriage, which left me physically uncomfortable and cratered any optimism we felt," Michelle said.
Michelle wants women to talk to each other
The realization that the 'biological clock' was real dawned on Michelle when she was 34, and trying to get pregnant. She opted for IVF after learning the egg production was limited, and Michelle feels women should speak about their bodies. "I think it's the worst thing that we do to each other as women, not share the truth about our bodies and how they work," she said.
They have a phenomenal marriage but they work on it
Revealing intricate details about her life, Michelle wrote how she and Barack worked on their marriage. She told ABC, marriage counseling helped both of them talk about their differences. Michelle told the young couples that they worked on their marriage and so should they. "I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there's something wrong with them," she said.
Separately, Michelle says she won't forgive Trump
In the memoir, Michelle wrote she would not forgive Trump for floating the 'birther' theory that her husband was not born in the US. "The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed," she said. She wrote Trump put her family at risk with his loud innuendos and she would never forgive him for that.
