Macron calls emergency meeting to discuss Trump's actions: Report
What's the story
According to reports, French President Emmanuel Macron has called an emergency meeting of European leaders to address the recent actions of United States President Donald Trump.
The meeting, scheduled to be held in Paris on Monday, was announced by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski at the Munich Security Conference.
Two European Union officials subsequently confirmed this development to Politico.
Strategy comparison
Sikorski compares Trump's strategy to Russian military tactic
Sikorski has welcomed the meeting, saying, "I'm very glad that President Macron has called our leaders to Paris."
He added that the talks would deal with Trump's recent moves "in a very serious fashion."
Sikorski compared Trump's foreign policy approach to a Russian military strategy called "razvedka boyem," which involves testing boundaries before moving back.
Security concerns
European leaders express concerns over Trump's influence
The meeting will primarily center on Trump's impact on European security and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
European leaders have continued to worry about his effect in these areas.
Sikorski noted Trump's calls to increase European defense spending but also pointed to wider risks.
"You push and you see what happens, and then you change your position. And we need to respond," he said.
Diplomatic ties
Macron maintains cordial relationship with Trump
Despite these concerns, Macron has kept a cordial relationship with Trump. After Trump's re-election in November, the French leader had expressed a willingness to work with him again.
"Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity," Macron posted on X.
Presidential visit
Macron's Paris welcome to Trump
When Trump visited Paris in December to attend the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, Macron had welcomed him with open arms.
He recalled the support offered after the cathedral fire by saying, "It's a great honor for the French people to welcome you five years later."
This gesture further highlighted Macron's diplomatic approach toward his American counterpart as fears grow over US influence on European security and NATO.
