    Former James Bond star Sir Roger Moore passes away

    What's the story

    Sir Roger Moore, the former James Bond star died after battling with cancer at the age of 89, in Switzerland.

    His family announced the news on Twitter :"With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father Sir Roger Moore, passed away."

    Moore who portrayed the famous Bond character for the longest, will have a private funeral in Monaco.

    The Beginnings

    Sir Roger Moore, initial days of film career

    Known for having played the popular spy character James Bond, Sir Roger Moore was born in Stockwell, London, on 14 Oct 1927.

    He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and got into films working as an extra in the late 1940s.

    His initial film career included movies like The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954), Interrupted Melody (1955), and Diane (1956).

    As 007

    First role as Bond

    Moore who focused on TV series in the 1950s, gained international recognition from his lead role with series "The Saint" in 1962, which went on for six years.

    He was offered his first role as 007 in 1973 for "Live and Let Die". Moore went on to star in six more Bond films. "A View to Kill "(1985) was his last outing as Bond.

    Honours and humanitarian work

    Roger Moore was awarded the Commander of the most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II. He was honoured with knighthood in 2003. Last several years he worked as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
