59-year-old Kerala woman reaches Everest Base Camp watching YouTube tutorials
What's the story
In an incredible display of grit and self-learning, 59-year-old Vasanthi Cheruveettil, a tailor from Thalipparamba in Kerala's Kannur, has successfully trekked solo to the Everest Base Camp.
With no formal training or guidance, she depended on her rigorous preparation and online research.
Her journey started on February 15 from Surke, Nepal, and ended at the South Base Camp at the 5,364m altitude on February 23.
Training regimen
Cheruveettil's preparation and training for Everest trek
Cheruveettil had a rigorous schedule in preparation for her Everest trek. She walked for three hours a day, practiced in trekking boots, and trekked 5-6km with friends every evening.
To overcome the language barrier during her journey, she learned Hindi.
She also spent hours watching YouTube tutorials to get acquainted with basic trekking techniques, altitude acclimatization, and survival skills needed for high-altitude expeditions.
Journey challenges
Obstacles faced and Cheruveettil's determination
Cheruveettil's journey to the Everest Base Camp was not easy. Bad weather canceled her flight to Lukla, so she had to take an alternative route, through Surke.
But she never gave up: she was helped by a German couple in Nepal, who arranged for a porter to navigate through the treacherous trails.
Celebration moment
Cheruveettil's unique celebration at Everest Base Camp
When Cheruveettil reached Everest Base Camp, she celebrated her achievement in a distinctly Kerala style: draping a "kasavu" saree over her trekking gear and waving the Indian flag.
The moment soon went viral on social media.
This isn't her first solo adventure: she had traveled alone to Thailand last year after her friends backed out, doubting whether a woman could make such a journey alone.
Future aspirations
Cheruveettil's future plans and reflections
Cheruveettil financed her trips by running a tailoring business, occasionally assisted by her sons Vivek and Vineeth.
Her next dream destination? The Great Wall of China, a trip she hopes to make soon.
However, she knows such physically demanding adventures won't be possible for much longer due to age.
"I will be 60 soon," she said.
