Kerala man loses Gulf-job for insensitive comment on flood victims
Rahul Cheru Palayattu, an expat from Kerala, who worked at gulf firm Lulu Group International was sacked for posting an insensitive comment about the floods, which have brought the southern state of India to a standstill. Palayattu, who worked as a cashier in the Oman firm, was fired on Sunday. Quite insensitively, he had poked fun at the demand of sanitary items for the flood victims.
Palayattu asked if he should send condoms for relief work
Reportedly, on a Facebook post about the sanitary needs of the victims, Palayattu commented if he should send condoms for relief. His derogatory comment received backlash, after which he apologized. He said he was in an inebriated state. "At that time I did not know what I did was a grave mistake," he said in a Facebook video which he posted on Sunday.
In termination letter, Palayattu asked to hand over responsibilities immediately
The termination letter signed by Nasr Mubarak Salem Al Maawali, the firm's HR manager, read, "You are hereby instructed to hand over all your official responsibilities to your reporting Manager immediately and to contact the Accounts Department for your final settlement." Speaking about the decision, CCO V Nandakumar, said the company stood for humanitarian values. The decision was taken to send a loud message.
In Kerala's disaster, Gulf stands with it
Notably, MA Yusuff Ali, owner of Lulu group who hails from Kerala, donated 9.23 million UAE dirhams for relief work. The UAE formed a committee to provide relief and said people from Kerala contributed to the country's development. Till now, nearly 400 people have lost their lives and the state has suffered damages to the tune of Rs. 19,512 crore.
