How Kate Middleton gracefully returned to royal duties
What's the story
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has returned to her royal duties after reducing her public engagements following her cancer diagnosis.
Announcing her remission on January 14, she has since been active with several royal engagements. From visiting children's hospices to promoting early childhood development initiatives, the mother of three has been busy.
Despite initial speculation of limited public appearances, she has surprised many with solo engagements early this year.
Image shift
Middleton's evolving public image and expectations
Middleton's public image is being crafted differently, noted PEOPLE in a new report, citing old reports that suggested Kensington Palace won't regularly share details of her outfits for official engagements anymore.
This reinforces her intent to be seen as confident, resilient, and relatable.
Royal historian Amanda Foreman called Middleton the "MVP of the royal family," while biographer Ingrid Seward said it takes time to feel comfortable and do things your way.
Middleton seems to be at that stage now.
Balancing act
Middleton's role as future Queen and focus on health
As Middleton gears up for her future role as Queen, she is balancing increasing expectations with her health and family.
Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith praised her for downplaying her role, adding that when she does more than people expected, it has a bigger impact.
"It's evident that she is feeling closer to 100% than one would have thought at this stage," Smith added.
Comeback
Middleton's significant return at Commonwealth Day service
Middleton made a powerful return to public life at the Commonwealth Day service on March 10, her first appearance at the event since last year.
Clad in the stunning scarlet Catherine Walker & Co coat dress, she radiated newfound strength.
Foreman added the color was significant as "You only wear red when you're feeling confident."
Former press secretary to late Queen Elizabeth, Ailsa Anderson, also chimed in on Middleton's appearance saying, "She looked the best I have seen her."
Solo engagement
Middleton's solo appearance at St. Patrick's Day parade
On Monday, Middleton made a solo appearance at the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, carrying out her duty as honorary colonel of the Irish Guards.
It was an especially important engagement as she missed last year's event while recovering from abdominal surgery and later announcing her cancer treatment.
Royal author Robert Hardman pointed out such occasions are now being especially cherished, marking a reset in Middleton's royal duties.
