Pakistan will waste time in UNGA by bringing up Kashmir
With Pakistan plans to raise the issue of Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly, Syed Akbaruddin, India's permanent representative to the UN, said that Pakistan 'will waste time' with this. He opined that this issue has not been discussed in the last 40 years in UNGA and the discussion would be a waste of time.
What transpired in 2016 UNGA session: Pakistan and Kashmir issue
In September 2016, Pakistan raised the issue of Kashmir during the United Nations General Assembly session. Pakistani Prime minister Nawaz Sharif asked the UN to settle the Kashmir dispute. However, rejecting Pakistan's pleas Ban Ki-moon said this issue needs to be resolved between the 2 countries through dialogue. But, India rejected it with the statement that "talks and guns don't go together".
Pakistan to raise Kashmir issue in UN General Assembly
While all countries are gearing up for 72nd UNGA in New York, Pakistan is rallying up to raise the Kashmir issue, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi revealed. She said that the bilateral talks have been suspended and thus raising the "Kashmir issue internationally becomes even more important". She said the international community must "hear Pakistan, and they will hear Pakistan".
What will India focus on during this UNGA session?
India's permanent representative Syed Akbaruddin said Sushma Swaraj will be attending the UNGA session. He said that her focus will be on "UN reform, counter-terrorism, migration, climate change, and peacekeeping". Akbaruddin also restated that India will bring up the issue of Masood Azhar and will try to get him listed as a global terrorist and hope that China will not object.
Who will China favor?
This 72nd UN General Assembly will also underline where China's interests lie. While it denounced terror hamlets including its 'all-weather friend' Pakistan at the BRICS summit, it is yet to be seen if it thwarts India's plea to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.
