Iran permits officials to meet Indian crew on seized ship
Iran has given permission for Indian government officials to meet with the 17 Indian crew members aboard the seized Israel-affiliated cargo ship, MSC Aries. This assurance was provided by the Iranian foreign ministry following a discussion between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Amir Abdollahian, reports said. The move comes as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue and ensure the crew's wellbeing.
Why does this story matter?
The seizure of the cargo vessel MSC Aries, flying a Portuguese flag, occurred amidst escalating regional tensions following an Israeli assault on Iran's consulate in Syria. The vessel was intercepted by Iran's Revolutionary Guard commandos near the Strait of Hormuz. The crew comprised not only 17 Indians but also four Filipinos, two Pakistanis, one Russian, and one Estonian.
Indian officials to meet seized ship's crew soon
The Iranian foreign ministry has confirmed that representatives of the Indian government will soon be able to meet with the crew of the seized ship. "Dr. Amir Abdollahian said...we are following up on the details of the seized ship and soon it will be possible for the representatives of the Indian government to meet with the crew," stated a representative from Iran's foreign ministry.
India urges restraint amid rising Israel-Iran tensions
In response to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, Union minister Jaishankar has called for restraint and a return to diplomatic discussions. "Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy," Jaishankar said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He also mentioned that he discussed the current situation in the region with his Iranian counterpart, Abdollahian, emphasizing the need for de-escalation.
Jaishankar holds talks with Iranian, Israeli counterparts amid growing tensions
The minister has held discussions with his counterparts from Iran and Israel amid escalating tensions between the two nations, reports said. Two days ago, Iran launched a barrage of drones and cruise missiles at Israel, marking its first direct assault on the country. This followed Iran's warning to retaliate against Israel for the killings of seven Iranians, including Major General Mohammad Reza Zahedi —the Quds Force Commander.
