Indian-Americans support Trump's merit-based immigration plan at White House rally
In a rare pro-Trump rally, hundreds of skilled Indian workers and their families gathered outside the White House in Washington on Saturday to support the American President's plan for a merit-based immigration system. Trump's proposal to end chain migration and diversity lottery visa could expedite the process of getting a Green Card for several Indian immigrant families in the US. Read on for more.
Indian-Americans demand a comprehensive immigration bill
Indian-American families from all across the US showed up at the rally. They held banners/posters with slogans ranging from 'We need to support legal dreamers' to 'We support Trump.' Pushing for a comprehensive immigration bill, the campaigners urged POTUS to cut down the humongous Green Card backlog of highly skilled Indians by ending the per country limit of the legal permanent residency.
'Merit-based immigration will aid prosperity, fast economic growth'
"We are looking strictly for a merit-based immigration. That will bring prosperity and fast economic growth of the US," Krishna Bansal of Republican Hindu Coalition told PTI. "To grow at 4% per year, the US economy will need to add 400,000 high-skilled workers to the workforce each year. Immigration reform needs to address this issue as well," said Anil Sharma, another participant.
200,000 Indian immigrant children will have to leave US
Despite advanced education, the green card wait is endless for highly-skilled professionals. About 200,000 children of Indian immigrants will have to leave America after turning 21 because of their parents' 60-year-long wait to get their green cards even after approval, claims Republican Hindu Coalition.
