India declines mediation role in Russia-Ukraine conflict
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Kyiv, India has clarified its stance on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The country has denied taking on a mediatory role between the two nations, but expressed willingness to facilitate communication by relaying messages. This information was disclosed by sources familiar with the matter, who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of these diplomatic discussions, according to the Hindustan Times.
PM Modi's visit to Ukraine sparks diplomatic discussions
PM Modi is scheduled to visit Ukraine on August 23, marking a significant event as it will be the first by an Indian leader since Russia's invasion in February 2022. Last month, Andriy Yermak, chief of staff for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggested during a phone call with India's national security adviser that PM Modi could play a crucial role in achieving peace in Ukraine.
Modi visited Moscow in July
Since the war began, India has maintained that it can only be ended via negotiation and diplomacy. Modi had also visited Moscow for two days in July. During his discussion with President Vladimir Putin, Modi highlighted that dialogue is the best approach to resolving the ongoing crisis. "India has always called for respecting the United Nations Charter, including territorial integrity and sovereignty. There is no solution on the battlefield. Dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward," Modi stated.
Russia and India's defense ties
India is cautious about taking any stance that could be perceived as opposing Russia, which supplies nearly 60% of India's armed forces' arsenal and has become a leading crude oil supplier following Western sanctions due to the Ukraine invasion. However, Ukraine has urged it to take on a more significant role in ongoing peace efforts due to its close ties with Russia.
