'India imposes 150% tariff on alcohol, not helping....': White House
What's the story
The White House has condemned India's 150% tariff on American alcohol and 100% tariff on agricultural products.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said US President Donald Trump believes in reciprocity and wants fair trade practices.
Leavitt also accused Canada of "ripping off" the US and hardworking Americans for decades with its high tariffs.
Tariff disparities
Leavitt highlights unfair tariff rates
At a press briefing, Leavitt pointed out Canada's high tariff rates along with India's.
She said American cheese and butter attract nearly 300% tariffs in Canada, while India charges 150% on American alcohol.
"Do you think that's helping Kentucky bourbon be exported into India? I don't think so," she said.
She also mentioned Japan's high tariffs on US rice, which are 700%.
Trade tensions
Trump hints at potential tariff increases
Trump has also hinted at raising tariffs on Mexico and Canada, claiming that the world had taken advantage of the US in the past.
This comes after he temporarily delayed tariffs on some products from Mexico and Canada, before they were due to go into effect on April 2.
He also spoke about India's high tariff rates, saying it was very hard to trade with India.
Trade negotiations
India agrees to reduce tariffs amid scrutiny
India has reportedly agreed to lower its tariffs, following increased scrutiny over its trade practices.
This was revealed by Trump in a recent address at the White House.
The US has requested India to remove tariffs on nearly all goods except agricultural products, with less than a month to go before Trump's April 2 deadline for imposing reciprocal tariffs on India.
