China teaches students how to identify spies
China has embarked on a campaign to train students in schools and colleges on how to identify a foreign spy. The Communist Party of China is publishing easy-to-read books and ready reckoners on anti-espionage for this purpose. The campaign has been released in pockets and will spread nation-wide this year. The books are to be distributed among primary, middle-school and senior college students.
Beijing City National Security Bureau offering rewards for spies
The Beijing City National Security Bureau was recently offering rewards of $1500-70,000 for any information regarding foreign spies. Cartoons in newspapers warned Chinese women to stay away from foreign men, who could be spies too.
What kind of material is China giving students?
The books consist of graphics and comics to apprise students of what espionage is. It gives details on what kind of people are usually spies, what kind of people are vulnerable to being trapped into working for spies etc. It also detailed the ways in which foreign spies could manipulate Chinese citizens. It warned to students to be wary of intentions of foreigners.
Spies lecture students
An intelligence officer with the People's Liberation Army lectured 1.53 million college students and 5.52 million primary and middle school students in the Hubei province. He warned them that "threats lie all around them".
