Hezbollah retaliates against Israeli ground offensive with artillery attack
Hezbollah, the armed group from Lebanon, has announced that it fired artillery at Israeli military personnel stationed in the northern town of Metula, according to a report by Reuters. This attack follows the Israeli military's targeted strikes on Hezbollah's weapons manufacturing facilities and related infrastructure in Beirut's Dahiyeh area on Monday.
Israel commences ground operations in Lebanon
On Tuesday, Israel confirmed that its troops had conducted raids inside Lebanon, marking the beginning of anticipated ground operations after two weeks of extensive airstrikes aimed at Hezbollah's command structure and weapons sites. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that these "limited, localized, and targeted ground raids" are based on precise intelligence against Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
Israel's airstrikes claim lives of Hezbollah commanders
The Israeli military's intensive airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of seven high-ranking Hezbollah officials. Among those killed are group leaders Hassan Nasrallah, Nabil Kaouk, Ahmad Wehbe, Mohammad Surour, Ibrahim Kobeissi, and Ibrahim Akil. The Lebanese government reports that these strikes have also claimed approximately 1,000 civilian lives and displaced one million people from their homes.
US response to Israel's military actions in Lebanon
The White House and the US State Department haven't said anything about Israel's military moves in Lebanon yet. But President Joe Biden did voice his worries on Monday, calling for a ceasefire. When reporters asked about Israel's possible ground operations, he said, "I'm more worried than you might realize, and I support halting the operations."
