'India should take it seriously…': US reacts to Nijjar's killing
Reacting on the allegations associated with the case of Indian government's alleged involvement in the murder of the Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the United States on Monday stated that India should take it "very seriously" and should investigate it. On the arrest of three people linked with the killing of India-designated terrorist Nijjar, Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "I would refer you to the Canadian authorities to speak to the details of the investigation there."
Why does this story matter?
Diplomatic relations have been tense between New Delhi and Ottawa since last year after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian agents may have played a role in Nijjar's death, which took place outside a gurdwara in Surrey city. However, India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, dismissed these allegations as "absurd" and "motivated," attributing the situation to Canada's internal politics rather than any involvement from India.
Will wait to see the results: Miller
"We made clear when these allegations were first made public that it's something we think India should take very seriously and investigate," he said. Asserting that the US would "wait to see the results," Miller added saying, "They opened a committee of inquiry to look into the matter, and that work is ongoing, and we'll wait to see the results."
3 Indians charged in connection with Nijjar's death
The remarks came days after three Indian nationals were charged first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the Nijjar murder case. Those arrested by the Canadian police have been identified as Karanpreet Singh (28), Kamalpreet Singh (22) and Karan Brar (22). The police also released the photographs of the three accused along with the photograph of a Toyota Corolla car, which it claims was used by the suspects in the time leading up to the murder of Nijjar.
