Pew report: 64% of Indians view Pakistan "very unfavorably"
Nearly two-thirds of Indians (64%) of Indians hold a "very unfavorable" view of Pakistan, according to a survey conducted by Pew Research Center. Only 21% of Indians approve of PM Narendra Modi's policy towards Pakistan despite his hardened stance. The poll results come as tensions simmer between India and Pakistan over Islamabad's support for cross-border terrorism, among other things.
Congress-BJP supporters united in dislike for Pakistan
Overall, 71% of Indians view Pakistan "unfavorably" compared to 54% in 2013, the year Pew started tracking Indian public opinion about Pakistan. 70% of BJP supporters hold a "very unfavorable" view of Pakistan compared to 63% of Congress supporters. 69% of Indians living in states near the Pakistan border view Pakistan "very unfavorably" compared to 61% of Indians who stay further away.
21% support for Modi's Pakistan policy, 60% for Kashmir
Only 21% of Indians approve of Modi's Pakistan policy. This figure has remained consistent since 2015. However, Modi's policy on Kashmir has 60% approval. Around 64% of younger Indians (aged 18-29) support Modi's Kashmir policy compared to 51% of respondents aged above 50. Around 62% of Indians consider Kashmir a "big problem." Additionally, 63% of Indians support the use of military force in Kashmir.
