Ex-partner accused of killing Ugandan athlete Cheptegei dies from burns
Dickson Ndiema Marangach, the former partner of Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, has died from burn injuries sustained during an attack on Cheptegei. The death was reported at a Kenyan hospital where he was undergoing treatment. To recall, Cheptegei, a 33-year-old marathon runner who competed in the Paris Olympics, suffered burns to over 75% of her body in the September 1 attack and succumbed to her injuries four days later.
Dispute over land led to fatal attack
The fatal incident reportedly stemmed from a heated argument between Cheptegei and Marangach over a land dispute. Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom told AP that Marangach had purchased a jerrican of petrol, doused Cheptegei with it, and set her ablaze during their disagreement. Notably, Cheptegei, who finished 44th in Paris, is the third elite sportswoman to be killed in Kenya since October 2021.
Cheptegei's family had reported threats to police
Cheptegei's parents revealed that their daughter had purchased land in Trans Nzoia county to be closer to Kenya's numerous athletic training centers. Joseph Cheptegei, the athlete's father, disclosed last week that Marangach had been stalking and threatening his daughter. He expressed disappointment over the lack of security at Marangach's hospital bed and feared he might escape.
Cheptegei's death highlights domestic violence in Kenya
Cheptegei's tragic death has brought attention to the issue of domestic violence in Kenya, especially within its running community. Rights groups have warned that female athletes are at a high risk of exploitation and violence from men attracted to their prize money. Government data from 2022 revealed that nearly 34% of Kenyan girls and women aged 15-49 years have experienced physical violence, with married women being particularly vulnerable.
