Man to launch himself in rocket to test Flat-Earth theory
Despite centuries of scientific work and ample modern-day evidence proving that the Earth is a sphere, California-based "Mad" Mike Hughes has decided to launch himself on a homemade rocket to prove that the Earth is flat. The 61-year-old self-proclaimed daredevil has also said that he would be live-streaming the launch on the internet.
The recent resurgence of flat Earth theory
The debunked flat Earth theory has seen a resurgence in recent years, fuelled by the growth of online message boards and high-profile endorsements from celebrities. For instance, rapper BoB, a flat Earth theory subscriber, is currently attempting to raise $1 million for "experimental exploration".
Who is "Mad" Mike Hughes?
Mike Hughes' website describes him as "the only man to design, build and launch himself in a rocket" - Hughes flew in his own rocket in 2014. Hughes used to do car stunts earlier, but switched to rockets after he broke his back twice. The self-proclaimed daredevil also stated that once he completes his feat, he aims to run for the governorship of California.
Hughes does not subscribe to "science"
"I don't believe in science. I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air. But that's not science, that's just a formula," said Hughes.
What Hughes plans to do
According to a Washington Post report, Hughes plans to launch himself next week from the back of a motorhome he recently bought off Craigslist. Hughes' $20,000 homemade steam-powered rocket, which can reach an altitude of 1,800 feet, was sponsored by a flat Earth research group. After failing to get permission to launch from public land, Hughes has settled for a launch from private land.
