181 people died today in a military plane crash at the Boufarik military airport in Algeria, emergency services confirmed.
The plane, an Ilyushin Il-76, had left from Boufarik with scores of troops to the western Algerian city of Bechar.
Images splashed on television channels showed thick smoke billowing from the wreckage.
Ambulances and rescue personnel have been rushed to the site.
