Dubai ruler's wife, Princess Haya, flees UAE with money, kids
Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, has reportedly fled the United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with her two children and £31 million after the break-up of their marriage. She is the sixth wife of Sheikh Mohammed, who is the UAE's Vice-President and Prime Minister. Princess Haya is in hiding in London, claimed reports, Here's more.
Princess Haya requested political asylum in Germany: Reports
Princess Haya is also the half-sister of King Abdullah of Jordan. According to reports, she initially fled to Germany, where she requested political asylum, along with her children, 11-year-old Jalila and 7-year-old Zayed. She is also reportedly seeking a divorce after fleeing to Germany and is believed to have left the UAE with £31 million to begin a new life.
German diplomat helped Princess Haya 'escape' from Dubai: Arab media
Princess Haya, who is an Oxford University graduate, has not been seen in public since May 20. Notably, her social media accounts have been inactive since February. According to unconfirmed Arab media reports, a German diplomat helped her in escaping from Dubai. Reports also claimed that German authorities had even turned down a request from Dubai's billionaire ruler, Sheikh Mohammed, to return his wife.
Sheikh Mohammed's daughter attempted to flee from him last year
The news of Princess Haya fleeing the UAE comes after one of Sheikh Mohammed's daughters, Princess Latifa, attempted to flee from him last year. However, Latifa was forcibly returned to Dubai after being captured on a boat near the Indian coast. She alleged "abuse" at the hands of her father forced her to flee. Human rights groups claim Latifa is in captivity in Dubai.
Serious questions about what prompted Princess Haya to flee
Radha Stirling, the Chief Executive of London-based watchdog, Detained in Dubai, said, "Whenever someone applies for political asylum, obviously, it is because their lives are in danger, and because they have suffered severe abuses and violations of their human rights." She also said there are "serious questions" about what prompted the wife of Sheikh Mohammed, one of the world's richest persons, to flee.
Latifa alleged unspeakable abuse at hands of her father: Stirling
"We already know that Princess Latifa, Sheikh Mohammed's daughter, fled the UAE seeking asylum and alleging unspeakable abuse at the hands of her father. Now, it seems, Princess Haya, Sheikh Mohammed's wife, has also fled the country and sought refuge in Germany," Stirling said.
