He was joined by senior Indian-Americans in the government including Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and Seema Verma of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
'Hindu-Americans are beloved members of our great American family'
"The Lighting of the Diya is typically celebrated by families in their homes. Today, we proudly celebrate this holiday in THE PEOPLE'S HOUSE. In so doing, we reaffirm that Indian-Americans and Hindu-Americans are cherished, treasured and beloved members of our great American FAMILY," he wrote.
A history of Diwali at the White House
Former president George Bush started the tradition of celebrating Diwali at the White House. However, he never personally participated. Then it was celebrated mostly in the India Treaty Room in the adjacent executive office building. In his first year as president, Barack Obama lit the ceremonial lamp in the East Room. Last year, he celebrated Diwali in the Oval Office for the first time.
