Delta Air Lines issues strict 'underwear' rule for flight attendants
Delta Air Lines has issued a detailed memo outlining "appearance requirements" for potential and current flight attendants. The two-page document includes guidelines for grooming, hair, jewelry, and clothing. Notably, it specifies that while "proper undergarments" are mandatory, they should not be visible at any time. This new directive is part of an effort to make the airline's appearance guidelines more specific and transparent.
Delta's memo emphasizes 'dress for success' approach
A Delta spokesperson explained the rationale behind these guidelines to Daily Mail, stating, "In the interest of transparency and clarity for all prospective candidates we are encouraging people to 'dress for success' and give a great first impression as they aspire to join the flight attendant ranks." The memo further emphasizes that flight attendants are the face of Delta Air Lines and should embody its brand values.
Delta's appearance guidelines extend beyond clothing
The memo also includes specific guidelines for hair and grooming. Flight attendants are required to maintain "natural-looking" hair colors without any stark highlights or unnatural shades. Long hair must be secured away from the eyes, and if it extends past the middle of the back, it needs to be pinned up. Personal cleanliness and hygiene are emphasized, with a stipulation that eyelashes should appear natural and all nails must be of the same color.
Delta's memo details jewelry and tattoo regulations
The memo further details regulations regarding jewelry and tattoos. Only a single nose piercing is permitted, with specific types of studs allowed. "Only two earrings per ear are allowed — but no hoops. Earrings must not be larger than the size of a dime," it said. Visible body piercings are limited to two earrings per ear, excluding hoops. Tattoos must be covered at all times, but bandages are not deemed suitable for this purpose.
Delta's memo outlines clothing and behavior expectations
The memo also specifies that clothing "must be professional and fit properly," with dresses and skirts at or below knee length. Athletic shoes are not permitted, while closed-toe flats, heels, or slingbacks are acceptable. For those wearing the male uniform, a tie is required with button-collared dress shirts. During the interview day, profanity, chewing gum, and the use of phones or earbuds are not allowed.
