Canadian PM Trudeau finally receives Modi's jhappi at Rashtrapati Bhavan
From rumors of Indian government's cold-shoulder to Canadian high commissioner's dinner invitation to a convicted Khalistan terrorist Jaspal Atwal, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's India visit has been marred by controversies. However, today PM Narendra Modi warmly welcomed Trudeau and his family at Rashtrapati Bhavan. In the tour's last leg, Trudeau-Modi will look at a fresh start on India-Canada ties. Here's more about it.
Before the meeting, the two PMs engaged in Twitter diplomacy
Yesterday, PM Modi spoke about his Canadian counterpart's visit for the first time. He hoped it had been an "enjoyable stay" for Trudeau. Further, he said he was excited about meeting Trudeau's children, before tweeting a picture where he is holding PM's daughter Ella-Grace's ears during a 2015 Canada visit. Trudeau replied, "It's been great to visit so far - we'll see you today."
What are the two leaders expected to discuss?
PM Modi will probably seek fresh commitments from Trudeau to tackle activities of radical Sikh groups clamouring for a separate Khalistan. Further, stalled negotiations on the free trade agreement and a pact protecting investments will come up in talks. Issues related to defense/security and tackling climate change will also be discussed. Trudeau also met Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj to discuss "strengthening" of India-Canada ties.
What is the importance of this meeting?
Trudeau's visit has been criticized as "too choreographed" and his traditional Indian attires have reminded people of "Manyavar commercials." Further, had Canada heeded India's advice and ensured an early stop for a government-to-government meeting, issues related to Trudeau's engagements, alleged complicity with Khalistani elements and Modi's cold-shoulder wouldn't have ballooned. The two leaders' meeting now is crucial to salvage the rest of Trudeau's visit.
