Bangladeshi national arrested at Bengal border with fake Indian IDs
A Bangladeshi national, identified as Anamul Haq Sohel, was apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday while attempting to cross into India through the Changrabandha check post in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district. Sohel was found carrying fake Indian identification cards during a routine security check. He was traveling with his family and a young child from Rangpur, Bangladesh, intending to enter India on a medical visa.
Fake Indian IDs discovered during security check
During the BSF's security check at the border, an Indian Aadhaar card and PAN card were found in Sohel's possession. Upon further interrogation, it was revealed that these identification cards had been fraudulently obtained from Greater Noida. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Kolkata was consulted regarding this case, following which Sohel's immigration status was marked as "Entry Refusal" and his counterfeit IDs were seized.
Security measures heightened in Kolkata
In the wake of this incident, security measures have been ramped up at several key locations in Kolkata, including the Bangladesh High Commission. The BSF has also increased its personnel strength at all three checkpoints in West Bengal to prevent any similar occurrences in the future. Bangladesh has been rocked by violent protests since July after a court reinstated a job quota scheme that had been canceled in 2018. Nearly 400 people have been killed in the violence.
