Bangladesh Army bolsters operations in Dhaka amid protests
What's the story
The Bangladesh Army has ramped up security across Dhaka, the capital, following widespread protests by Islamic groups.
The protests are mainly against Israeli actions in Palestine, and the alleged assault on Muslims in India.
Law enforcement agencies, including the army, have increased their presence in and around the mosque area.
The increased military presence is a preventative measure against possible unrest as tension grows within the city.
Increased vigilance
Security forces increase presence in protest-prone areas
As a precaution against possible violence, police along with the army have reinforced security around Baitul Mukarram Mosque, a major protest site.
This was ahead of the Friday prayers when protests were likely to break out.
Cops and army members searched at the entrances of the mosque while the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were positioned at key points across Dhaka.
Citywide patrols
Joint security forces conduct intensified operations
Joint security forces have intensified their drives throughout the city, accompanied by an increase in army patrols and check posts.
Army men were witnessed conducting intensified patrols and establishing checkposts in several strategic areas including Rampura, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Baitul Mukarram, Bijoy Sarani, Mohakhali, Gulshan, and Khilkhet.
The drives are part of an effort to ensure law and order amid rising tensions in the capital.
Tensions escalate
Social media influencer launches campaign against army chief
France-based Bangladeshi social media influencer Pinaki Bhattacharya has launched a new campaign against the Chief of Army Staff (CAS).
He has called on the extremists and students to protest against him, accusing him of being influenced by India.
This has prompted a widespread social media campaign against the Bangladesh Army, further heating up the tensions within the city.
Precautionary steps
Army implements precautionary measures amid social media campaign
As tensions continue to rise, the Bangladesh Army has taken precautionary steps. Troop movements outside cantonments have been restricted and soldiers have been directed to refrain from confrontations on the streets.
To manage the situation, CAS has summoned all Divisional Commanders (Div Cdrs) for a physical and virtual meeting to evaluate the security landscape and chalk out necessary countermeasures.
