Trump: Apple to build three new 'big' plants in US
President Donald Trump said Apple's chief executive Tim Cook has promised to build three new manufacturing plants in the US. "I spoke to (Cook), he's promised me three big plants - big, big, big," Trump told the Wall Street Journal. Previously, Trump frequently targeted US companies, including Apple, to create jobs by manufacturing products in the US. Apple hasn't responded to the report.
Apple came under fire from Trump due to overseas manufacturing
In January 2016, Trump said in a campaign speech: "We're gonna get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries." In May, Cook said Apple is launching a $1 billion fund to boost manufacturing in America. Cook also said the company plans to fund programs teaching citizens how to write computer code and develop apps.
Apple claims it has created 2 million jobs in America
Trump didn't elaborate on where or when the Apple plants would be built. At present, Apple manufactures nearly all its products in China but employs developers and designers in America. Apple also procures some parts from US-based manufacturers like Corning. Some Apple products are also made in USA by contract manufacturers. Apple said it has created 2 million jobs in the US.
Trump says Foxconn also planning to build manufacturing plant
Trump also said Foxconn, a major supplied for Apple, plans to build a large plant in America and is "strongly considering" Wisconsin for this. Last month, Foxconn said it plans to invest over $10 billion in a factory building displays in the US.
