What is the British Parliament sex scandal all about?
Ever since numerous sexual harassment allegations popped up against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, a number of men/woman have been speaking out about their experiences on harassment at the hand of powerful individuals In this context, a sexual harassment scandal has struck the UK Parliament. British defense minister, Michael Fallon recently become the first MP to resign on account of such allegations. Here's more.
Why did Fallon resign?
Fallon had apologized for touching a radio presenter's knee in 2002 after allegations surfaced recently. In the resignation letter written to PM Theresa May, Fallon said that he was resigning as his past conduct "fell below the high standards that we require of the armed forces." While Fallon acknowledged the allegations against him, he stated that many of these were false.
What are the allegations against prominent British MPs?
International Trade minister Mark Garnier allegedly requested a female assistant to buy sex toys. Deputy PM Damian Green has been accused of touching a conservative activist inappropriately and sending her provocative text messages in 2015. Meanwhile, rape allegations have been made against Labour Party members. Stephen Crabb, a former cabinet minister has also been accused of sending inappropriate text-messages to a woman he interviewed.
Indian-origin MP: May refused to act on sexual abuse thrice
"Three years ago, I brought evidence to May in this House that whips had used information about sexual abuse to demand loyalty from MPs... On three occasions, I asked her to act and on three occasions she did not," alleges Indian-origin Labour MP Lisa Nandy.
How has May responded to the scandal?
May has already called for a probe into Garnier. Addressing the House of Commons recently, she stressed on the duty to ensure that "everyone coming to the house to contribute to public service is treated with respect." "We will take action against those where there are allegations that we see, and the evidence is there, that there has been misconduct," she added.
Did the Conservative Party compile a list of "handsy" MPs?
Recent media reports have indicated that the Conservative Party has compiled a list of at least 36 sitting MPs who have been accused of sexual harassment. Some of the allegations taken into account include having affairs with junior employees and getting "handsy" with women.
