3,505 days to get Green Card? What Indian techie claimed
An Indian tech professional, specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), has been granted permanent residency status in the United States after living and working there for nearly 10 years. The individual, employed by a software corporation, expressed relief at no longer having to worry about visa stamps or I-94 dates in a now-deleted X post. The Indian techie's case is one of thousands of highly qualified individuals who are facing exceptionally long wait times to get permanent residency in the US.
He referred to the H-1B visa system as 'restrictive'
He has now deleted the tweet and set his X account to private after the matter "blew up." In his X thread, he referred to the H-1B visa system as "restrictive" and explained why. "A H-1B visa is incredibly restrictive. You need a new visa stamp every few years from the US consulate outside the country. If you don't have one, you cannot enter the US. I've never been able to attend a single conference because of this," he wrote.
US politicians push for Green Card backlog solution
The development comes amidst calls from leading US politicians for a resolution to the Green Card backlog. Representatives from both the Democratic and Republican parties are advocating for the elimination of the 7% country cap on Green Card issuance. This issue is particularly impacting Indian professionals linked to the H-1B visa, who are working in specialized fields in the US.
Understanding the significance of a Green Card
A Green Card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, is a crucial document for immigrants in the US. It signifies that the holder has been granted the right to live in the country permanently. The granting of this status to an immigrant means they no longer have to worry about visa-related issues and can reside in the US without restrictions.
