Zaheer Khan supports IPL's impact player rule, contradicts Rohit, Kohli
Zaheer Khan, the newly-appointed mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has publicly expressed his support for the Indian Premier League's (IPL) Impact Player rule. This stance puts him at odds with Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and star player Virat Kohli. The controversial rule was introduced in the 2023 season and allows teams to substitute a player during their innings based on match requirements.
Zaheer's stance on the impact player rule
Zaheer voiced his support for the Impact Player rule during a press conference at LSG's team owner's headquarters in Kolkata. He stated, "there has been a debate around the impact sub rule. I'm going on record to say that I'm all for it." This statement comes despite criticisms from prominent cricketers like Sharma and Kohli who believe that this rule hinders the growth of Indian all-rounders and disrupts the equilibrium between bat and ball.
Zaheer believes impact player rule benefits young cricketers
Zaheer further argued that the Impact Player rule has significantly benefited young Indian cricketers. He said, "It has definitely given opportunities to a lot of uncapped Indian talents." He also suggested that this rule could play a crucial role in the upcoming mega auction where teams might show interest in these players.
Zaheer's view on all-rounders and the impact player rule
Zaheer also addressed concerns about the Impact Player rule's effect on all-rounders. He stated, "As far as all-rounders are concerned, right now there is no space for a half all-rounder because of the impact sub (rule). But if you are a genuine all-rounder, (then) no one can stop you." He believes that this rule does not discourage genuine all-rounders but instead adds value to their abilities with both bat and ball.
Franchise owner praised Zaheer's strategic acumen
Meanwhile, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka praised Zaheer during the announcement at the RPSG office in Kolkata. "Till some time ago I didn't know that he was no longer with Mumbai Indians. I approached him immediately. It is as simple as that," he said at the unveiling of Zaheer as the new mentor. "He is strategically strong. He has got respect amongst the community without doubt. And his mind is clear."
