Chahal named in India A for 4-day games against SA
With an intention to prepare Yuzvendra Chahal for the Test format, the BCCI has named him in the India A squad. India A are set to face South Africa A in two 4-day matches, starting from August 4. Chahal might even feature in the Test series against England, as India are facing injury woes. He is a regular choice in both ODIs and T20Is.
Reason behind his selection
It has been reported that the Indian board and team management want wrist spinners in the squad. Even though they are satisfied with the Kuldeep-Chahal combination, they are concerned that Chahal has not played many first-class matches. Even if he does not find a place in the current series, the board might try him out in the upcoming Test series against West Indies.
How has Chahal performed in international matches?
Yuzvendra Chahal had made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2016, and in the second match of the series, he took 3 wickets for 25 runs. Chahal is the first Indian bowler to take 5-wicket and 6-wicket hauls in T20Is. He has the best figures for a leg-spinner in T20I history (6/25). He was also the highest wicket-taker in T20Is in 2017.
Information about the India A squad
The India A squad will be led by Shreyas Iyer. He had made his ODI debut for the senior team in December last year. Talented youngsters like Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Markande have been named in the squad. They will hope to put up a strong show in these fixtures to strengthen their chances of breaking into the first team.
What next for India A?
India A have another series lined up after the two matches against South Africa A. The two teams will join Australia A for a quadrangular one-day series which will also include India B. Manish Pandey will be leading the India B team. India B will also feature Ishan Kishan, KKR youngster Gill and all-rounder Krunal Pandya.
