WV Raman reportedly appointed coach of Indian women's cricket team
Sources close to the BCCI have revealed to PTI that WV Raman will be taking over as the coach of the Indian women's cricket team. There was competition between former men's World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten and Raman, but it is believed that Raman has won in the end as Kirsten was not eager to give up his lucrative RCB job. Here's more.
On the new coach of the women's cricket team
Raman is currently serving as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He has played for India in 11 Test matches and 27 ODIs, and boasts a vast experience in coaching domestic Ranji sides like Tamil Nadu and Bengal. He has even coached the India U-19 men's team. Raman was the first Indian to score a ton in South Africa.
There were controversies and disputes regarding his selection
Former coach Ramesh Powar was hired as an interim coach and received the backing of women cricketers Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana to become the permanent coach. Reportedly, there were also conflicts within the BCCI Committee of Administrators (CoA) regarding the appointment of a new coach as well, with Diana Edulji wanting Powar to carry on and Vinod Rai wanting a fresh face.
