ICC World Test Championship 2023-25: Contenders to reach the final
The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle is witnessing an intense competition for the top two positions. Historically, teams have aimed for a score of around 60% to secure a place in the final. In the current scenario, Team India leads with a healthy PCT of 68.52%, followed by Australia at 62.50%. However, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are still in the race while England's chances taking a hit. Here we analyze the contenders to reach the Lord's final.
Sri Lanka are in with a chance
Sri Lanka currently hold a PCT of 42.86% in the WTC 2023-25 cycle, with series against New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia remaining. Their recent victory in the 3rd Test versus England at The Oval, keep them with a chance of a top-two finish. As per ESPNcricinfo, if SL secure victories in their all six upcoming matches, their PCT could rise to 69.23%. SL have played 7 Test matches so far, winning three and losing four (36 points).
India are in the driver's seat to reach 3rd final
Team India is currently leading the table with a strong PCT of 68.52%, despite having the most matches left to play in this cycle. India are set to play Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home. This will be followed by a tour Down Under later this year. India, who reached the 2019-21 and 2021-23 WTC finals, are on course to make it to a third successive WTC final. They have played nine matches (W6 D2 L1).
Australia have to play smart cricket
Reigning champions Australia hold the second place with a PCT of 62.50%. The will be up against India and SL next. Notably, India have beaten the Aussies in each of their last two visits Down Under. Also, they will face Sri Lanka away, which is a tricky test. Australia need to win a chunk of their remaining seven matches. If they beat India at home, their ife would become a lot easier. Australia have played 12 matches (W8 D3 L1).
Bangladesh and New Zealand remain in the mix
Bangladesh's PCT reads 45.83% and they are sitting fourth on the points table. Their recent 2-0 series win against Pakistan served as a huge boost. Bangladesh face a stern challenge against India and West Indies away. They also face South Africa at home. NZ have played only six out of their 14 matches in this cycle. They have five matches in Asia against SL and India respectively to come. The Kiwis have a PCT of 50%.
England need favors from other teams
Ben Stokes-led England have an outside chance of making it to the final. However, they need to win all of their six remaining matches against the likes of Pakistan and New Zealand. Notably, both these series are away from home. As per ESPNcricinfo, if the Three Lions win all of their remaining matches against Pakistan and New Zealand, the highest score they can achieve is 57.95%. England's PCT reads 42.19. They are currently sixth.
