Legend Srikkanth feels Pant should bat at number four
India have enjoyed a smooth run in the ICC World Cup 2019 till now. Even though they have remained unbeaten so far, critics continue to debate who is better suited for the number four spot. In the last three matches, the management picked all-rounder Vijay Shankar over wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant. However, ex-Indian selector Krish Srikkanth believes that Pant might be a better choice.
Pant came in as replacement for Shikhar Dhawan
Although Pant was not a part of the 15-member squad, he was brought in mid-way during the tournament as a replacement for injured Shikhar Dhawan. While KL Rahul batted at the number four spot against South Africa, following Dhawan's injury, he was promoted as the opener and Shankar was given Rahul's spot. Shankar's all-round capabilities gave India an edge in the match against Pakistan.
Srikkanth believes Pant understands English conditions well
In his column for ICC, Srikkanth wrote he would have put Pant at number four, had he been involved with the team management. He also pointed out that Pant has quite some experience of playing in England. "They have brought him over here now, he is ready to go and, most importantly, he has played in England before, so understands the conditions," he wrote.
Srikkanth feels Pant can put experience to use against England
"We saw him impress in the Test series here last summer when he came into the side and with England up next, maybe now is a good time to get him in there against a familiar opponent," Srikkanth noted.
Pant had a great campaign in IPL
If we talk about Pant's recent form, he enjoyed a great campaign in the IPL 2019. In the last season, Pant played superbly, scoring 488 runs in 16 innings at a fine average of 37.53, including three half-centuries. He also had a top score of 78*. However, the tournament follows a T20 format, and is played on batsmen-friendly Indian pitches.
Pant has never played an ODI in England
It should be noted that Pant has never played an ODI in England to date. Coupled with the pressure of playing in a World cup match, India would be taking a big risk if they pick Pant for tomorrow's tie.
India should stick with Shankar for now
Contrary to what Srikkanth suggested, we believe it is wise for Kohli to not tinker with his team. While Shankar is yet to make an impact with the bat, he has been decent with the ball, giving India an option of an extra seamer. Further, Pant is yet to prove his mettle in ODIs and World Cup is not the right time to experiment.
