Sri Lanka beat Windies: Here are the records broken
Sri Lanka came up with an all-round performance to tame Windies by 23 runs in the match number 39 of the ICC World Cup 2019 at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Monday. Although the match was a dead rubber, it has provided Lanka with an opportunity to finish the tournament on a high. Meanwhile, here are the records broken.
How did the match pan out?
Winning the toss, Windies skipper Jason Holder elected to bowl first. However, the decision backfired as Sri Lanka's top-order decimated their bowling attack, while Avishka Fernando's 104 propelled them to a challenging total of 338/6. In reply, West Indian Nicholas Pooran did score a century, but in vain as Lanka pressed hard with their bowling attack to walk away with a win.
Lanka post their second lowest power-play total of this tournament
Although Lanka posted 300+, they did not have the best of starts during the power-play. Despite losing no wickets, they could only manage 49 runs in first power-play, which is their second lowest total of this tournament, while their previous lowest was 48/2 against England.
Avishka becomes youngest Lankan centurion in World Cup
By playing a splendid innings of 104, not just Avishka helped Lanka slam a huge total, but also scripted a record. He is now the youngest centurion from Lanka in the World Cup, at the age of 21 years and 87 days. He is followed by Lahiru Thirimanne (25 years, 204 days) and Upul Tharanga (26 years, 36 days).
Lanka make the most out of the middle phase
Having posted their second-lowest power-play total in this World Cup, Sri Lanka quickly recovered to put in their best performance in the middle phase. They slammed their highest tally of 204 runs between 11th to 40th over, while their previous best was 149/8 against Australia.
Lanka script two records with a big total
Courtesy of Avishka's century, Lanka managed to post their highest ODI total against the Windies. Notably, their previous best was 330/7, which they achieved in Bulawayo, 2016. Moreover, this was also Lanka's highest ODI total playing in England, while their previous best was 324/2 against England in Leeds, 2006.
