2019 World Cup: Jofra Archer included in England's squad
England announced their final 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 starting from May 30 onwards. The Three Lions have now included the pace sensation Jofra Archer. Notably, Archer had made his debut for the side earlier this month against Pakistan in the five-match ODI series. Besides Archer, Liam Dawson and James Vince were named as well. Here's more on the same.
Archer's inclusion sees Willey miss the cut
Archer, who made the right noise, wasn't named earlier in the provisional squad. The Sussex player impressed everyone after making his ODI debut against Pakistan recently. However, Archer's inclusion saw David Willey missing the cut. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson was a surprise inclusion as well. He replaced Joe Denly. Opener James Vince was drafted in for the sacked Alex Hales.
Archer's international career till now
Archer played two ODIs against Pakistan and picked two wickets. Prior to that, he had produced figures of 1/40 against Ireland in the one-off ODI encounter. The 24-year-old witnessed a stunning rise through England's domestic ranks and was lucky after the ECB changed the residency rules from seven years to only three in 2018. Also, Willey's lack of consistency against Pakistan, served Archer well.
Archer can offer substance for England
Archer is a strong individual and can chip in with the bat as well with his shot-making abilities. Archer has impressed in both the seasons of the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. The pacer, who was born in Barbados, was called into the England squad for the first time last month. Notably, he became eligible to play for England earlier this year.
He's certainly lived up to expectations: Bayliss on Archer
"I hadn't seen [Archer] play live before but he has certainly lived up to expectations. He's got good control, good pace and he can bowl in all the three phases of the match," said England boss Trevor Bayliss.
What did Archer state earlier this month?
"Anyone would think about it [the World Cup] but I will just try to play well and hope, I guess. Obviously the guys have been together a long time and they probably do deserve it so I won't feel too bad if I am left out," Archer had said earlier. But England went on to take a big call after monitoring his progress.
