World Cup: Alex Hales dropped from England squad- Details here
England opener Alex Hales has been dropped from the squad following his ban for using recreational drugs. As a result, Hales will miss England's upcoming series at home, including both ODI and T20I series against Pakistan. He would not be traveling to Ireland for the one-off ODI. Notably, he has also been dropped from the provisional squad of the ICC World Cup 2019.
Hales banned for 21 days for failing the drug test
It was reported a couple of days back that Hales had failed a drug test. He was tested positive for using a recreational drug. Interestingly, England selectors had no clue about his test results while announcing the squads. As The Guardian reported, Hales was handed a 21-day ban, while he personally pulled himself out of the Nottinghamshire one-day campaign for personal reasons.
ECB: Decision taken in best interest of the team
Ashley Giles, ECB Managing Director and the national selectors have said the decision was taken, keeping the interest of the team in mind. They added it had to be done to provide a clean environment, amidst also ensuring that there were no needless distractions. As per them, the team remains in a good phase to succeed. Hales was enjoying a good form in ODIs.
Giles confirms Alex's England career not finished
Giles further said, "I want to make it clear this is not the end of Alex's career as an England player. The ECB and the PCA will continue to aid Alex and work alongside his county club Nottinghamshire to give him the support he needs."
Will this impact England's World Cup campaign?
While we wait for England to announce Alex's replacement for Pakistan series, it should be noted that he can still make it to the World Cup squad. As his ban gets over much before the World Cup, changes in the squad can still take place. However, the author feels that considering the form which England are enjoying, their campaign is unlikely to get impacted.
