The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reported that 2023 Men's ODI World Cup significantly boosted India's economy by $1.39 billion (₹11,637 crore). The tournament, which took place in October-November, was hosted across 10 Indian cities. Notably, the economic impact was primarily driven by tourism and media exposure. The event attracted a record crowd and developed over 48,000 jobs in various sectors such as hospitality and event management.
Tourism sector played a significant role in economic boost
The tourism sector played a crucial role in this economic surge, generating $861.4 million from accommodation, travel, and food services. International tourists alone contributed $281.2 million to the economy. The report also revealed that nearly 19% of international attendees were visiting India for the first time. Notably, 68% of the same recommended India as a tourist destination.
A record number of spectators
The 2023 ODI World Cup attracted a record number of spectators, with nearly 75% new attendees. Businesses and stakeholders garnered $70.7 million from media exposure. An additional $18 million were generated through jobs.
ICC CEO highlights cricket's significant economic power
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice stated, "The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating an economic benefit of $1.39 billion for India." He further emphasized that the event created thousands of jobs and showcased India as a premier tourist destination. The World Cup will likely have long-term benefits, with 59% of international attendees expressing interest in visiting India again.
Team India's 2023 WC campaign
India started their campaign with a six-wicket triumph in a low-scoring clash against Australia. The Rohit Sharma-led side recorded wins over Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Though the New Zealand game was a close affair, India prevailed. India recorded 100-plus run victories in each of their last four league games. The team defeated NZ in the semi-final to qualify for their fourth WC final. India's unbeaten run was finally ended by Australia in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
