Records scripted by Mohammed Shami in 2019 World Cup
Mohammed Shami impressed one and all with his superb bowling show in the match against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2019. India held their nerves to beat the Afghans in a low-scoring affair in Southampton. Shami, who was playing his maiden game in World Cup 2019, ended up taking a hat-trick. Here are the records scripted by him.
Shami becomes seventh highest World Cup wicket-taker for India
Mohammed Shami (4/40) now has 21 career World Cup wickets. He had taken 17 scalps in the 2015 edition of the World Cup. The right-arm fast bowler surpassed the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh (20 wickets each) in terms of World Cup wickets. He is now the seventh highest wicket-taker for India the World Cup.
Shami only the second Indian to claim a CWC hat-trick
Shami became the first person to claim a hat-trick in the ongoing CWC 19. In the 2015 edition, Steven Finn and JP Duminy had claimed hat-tricks. The Bengal pacer is also the 10th bowler in World Cup history to claim a hat-trick. He also became the second Indian after Chetan Sharma (1987) to achieve this mark in the biggest cricket tournament.
Other feats registered by Mohammed Shami
Shami became the fourth Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in ODI cricket after Chetan Sharma, Kapil Dev and Kuldeep Yadav. Shami now has 23 ODI wickets in 2019. Only, Yuzvendra Chahal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (24 each) are ahead of him. The senior cricketer also raced to 117 career ODI scalps as he eclipsed Ishant Sharma (115).
Shami's energy lifts this Indian side: Our take
Shami has been bowling really well in 2019 and he has increased his pace, besides looking much fitter. With Bhuvi out with a hamstring injury, Shami came in and made sure he did the job for India. This is real luxury for Virat Kohli. He has three seasoned premier pacers in the ranks. Shami's energy lifts this Indian side and that's a positive factor.
India face West Indies next on June 27
India's next assignment is against a depleted West Indies outfit on June 27. India will look to stay unbeaten and seal a fifth victory in CWC 19. Shami will be wanting to show his influence once again with the ball.
