Women's World Cup 2022: WI beat NZ in last-over thriller
West Indies beat New Zealand in the first match of the 2022 Women's World Cup at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. They defended 259, winning the match by just three runs. Although NZ skipper Sophie Devine led from the front, NZ fell short in the final over. Earlier, West Indies opener Hayley Matthews slammed a scintillating ton to power WI's innings. Here are the records.
How did the match pan out?
Hayley Matthews was the lone warrior for WI, who were put in to bat. The likes of Stafanie Taylor, Shemaine Campbelle, and Chedean Nation chipped in with useful knocks. West Indies eventually managed 259/9 in 50 overs. New Zealand lost Suzie Bates early on, however, skipper Sophie Devine kept them afloat. New Zealand failed to score six runs off the final over.
A captain's knock by Devine
Sophie Devine played a captain's knock for New Zealand. She held one end even after losing partners. The New Zealand skipper fired her sixth ODI century in the run-chase. She finished with 108 with the help of 10 fours. NZ were reduced to 162/6 before Devine and Katey Martin shared a valuable stand. The duo brought NZ close to victory.
Devine reaches 3,000 ODI runs
Devine raced to 3,000 ODI runs in the run-chase. She has become the fourth woman from New Zealand to reach this landmark in ODI cricket. Others to have achieved this feat are Suzie Bates, Amy Satterthwaite, and Debbie Hockley.
