Ranji Trophy: Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant named in Delhi's probables
Indian cricket team stars Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been drafted in Delhi's preliminary squad for the forthcoming Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season. Kohli, India's premier batter across formats, could return to the red-ball tournament after over a decade. The inclusion of these two prominent figures aligns with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s strategy of reintegrating established players into domestic cricket.
Delhi's 84-member list for Ranji Trophy
The senior selection committee, led by Gursharan Singh (chairperson), K Bhaskar Pillai (selector), Rajeev Vinaik (selector), Sarandeep Singh (chief coach), and Rajan Manchanda (joint secretary), released an 84-member list on September 24. As per reports, Kohli and Pant, including other players, are set to undergo a fitness test on September 26. However, the international-bound will be exempted from this fitness assessment.
Kohli and Pant return to Delhi Ranji squad
As per Wisden, this marks the first instance of Kohli and Pant being included in Delhi's Ranji Trophy preliminary squad since 2019. Kohli last played in the Ranji Trophy during the 2012/13 season against Uttar Pradesh. He played alongside Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in that match. Although Kohli's potential return could significantly enhance Delhi's prospects, his commitment for Team India may limit his participation.
Other players in Delhi's Ranji Trophy probables
The preliminary squad also includes Indian Premier League (IPL) players Ayush Badoni, Hrithik Shokeen, Anuj Rawat, and Simarjeet Singh among others. Mayank Yadav, the fast bowler who impressed during IPL 2024 with his express pace, has also been named. Navdeep Saini, the third-highest wicket-taker in the 2024 Duleep Trophy, is also there, but Ishant Sharma has missed the cut.
Pant's impressive Ranji Trophy record
Pant, known for his aggressive batting style across formats, has served the Delhi side for long. Since his debut in 2015, he has featured in 17 Ranji Trophy matches. Pant grabbed eyeballs during the 2016/17 edition as he smashed the fastest ton in the tournament's history. He struck a 48-ball hundred against Jharkhand.
